Instructions:
Measure your waist where you wear your belt. If you are making for someone else
and have their trouser size the belt needs to be about 2 inches or 50 mm longer
than their size. So if they are a 36 inch size – then you need a 38 inch belt. Measure
the leather from the middle hole at the tip to the end of the buckle, then allow about
4 inches or 100 mm to turn over behind the buckle. Punch an oval hole for the
buckle using an Oval Punch. Use a Super Skiver to thin down the
leather where the buckle fits and the leather turns over. You need to shave about 2-3
mm off. This allows the leather to bend without cracking and the belt will not be too
bulky around the buckle. Punch 2 X 5 mm holes. The first hole goes
about 10 mm from the end of the oval slit, then allow about 20 – 25 mm for the keeper
and punch the second hole. Carve or decorate the leather as required then apply
an edge finish, sealer and lacquer. You can also apply some leather conditioner to
the skived leather to help soften the leather for bending it over.
Fit the buckle and bend the leather over and mark the positions for the holes in
the turned over leather. Punch these holes using the 5 mm punch. Fit the Chicago
Screw closest to the buckle, then attach the keeper and fit the second Chicago Screw.
Size when made 38 mm belt – cut to required size
